We had a wonderful time in Gatuk homestay during our Kinnaur-Spiti valley tour in May 2023. The view from our room was splendid - the snow clad Pin Parvati mountain and the Pin river was just infront of the window!!!The owner of the homestay, Mr. Gatuk and his entire family were so nice and hosted us with utmost love and care..The food they served was also very tasty!!

The Gatuk Homestay is a surprising discovery I made on Google Maps. I'd no idea of places to stay in the Pin Valley, and it's rather difficult to call up any properties in the Pin, as there's no mobile connectivity or wi-fi. Luckily, I was able to connect with the owner on Instagram @gatukhomestay_mudh. Run by a hardworking old lady and her son, Gatuk, this is the best organized genuine homestay in the beautiful village of Mudh, in the upper reaches of the absolutely ethereal Pin Valley. Gatuk has four good-value rooms and a dormitory. Of these, the two on the first-floor have attached bathrooms with geysers and are amazingly comfortable, with picture-postcard views of the valley from the room. The two rooms on the second floor open on to the mud terrace and command fine views of the valley and the village. Sitting with the family in their traditional Spiti kitchen with floor mattresses and low tables is an experience in itself. It's an honest, hardworking, Buddhist family with bent backs and sunburnt faces. The old lady chops the fodder for the two family cows, feeds them, milks them, and makes butter and cheese from the milk. The family eat what they grow on their smal plots of tough land scattered around the village.Owner Gatuk, is a knowledgeable guide, and has good knowledge of the flora and fauna in the region. The rooms are available on room-only basis as well, in case you find the Spiti food austere and simple. You may eat at the Tara Traveller's Café next door with its wide menu. Since this is a homestay and not a guesthouse, it would be nice if you're sensitive to local culture and don't impose yourself on the host family. There can be water issues early in the season, as well as in October, due to sub-zero night temperatures that freeze the pipes. Gatuk and his 68-year old mother do the best they can to make you comfortable. It's also a good chance to experience how people live in extremely harsh conditions where winter stretches from mid-October to mid-May.

The Location of the Homestay was awesome. Not just the view from the roof but also from the room. I spent a lot of time on the roof doing Timelapse, and the valley that goes beyond Mudh, was straight ahead looking out of the window. The food was great, made by the homestay owner. For breakfast I sat near the stove, while the aloo paratha was being made, and it come from the frying pan right onto my plate. A great place to spend at least two night. We however and a long trip ahead of us, so spent just one night.
